A University City Pottery vase made by Frederick Hurten Rhead sold in April for $570,000, more than five times estimate, at John Moran Auctioneers in Pasadena, Calif. It was originally purchased at the pottery in 1910 and given as a gift to an Iowa family. Family descendants living in California recently rediscovered the 18-inch vase, designed by Rhead (1880-1942) and his wife, Agnes. It’s decorated with an incised and colored peacock.
