A record price of $37,500 was paid for the Maurits (M.C.) Escher 1938 print “Sky and Water I” at a May Bonhams auction. I used Escher’s strange pictures in math classes I taught when we discussed tessellation puzzles. I didn’t buy one then (Escher died in 1972) because $1,000 was too expensive for a print of a living artist. I do have an inexpensive copy and a rug showing the birds and the fish.
