Crown Jewels of the Wire, a publication for insulator collectors, reports on rare types of insulators and on shows and other activities for collectors. An article by Tom Katonak (March 2013) introduced me to copper-top insulators from Australia and New Zealand. They were made by Pilkington Brothers of England. Copper, aluminum and iron were used for tops. The metal caps gave “added structural integrity but also provided arc-suppression.” More than a dozen styles were made. I have a small collection of ordinary, easy-to-find aqua CD insulators “inherited” from my son, who collected them as a teenager. There was little information about insulators back then. Now insulator collectors can go to local and national shows, join clubs and bid at special auctions. The 2015 National Insulator Association Convention and Show will be held July 2-5 at the Timber Creek Convention Center in Sandwich, Ill.
