The famous "Heart of Country" antiques show in Nashville, Tenn., will not return. The show, first held in 1982, started the American Country style, thanks to Mary Emmerling, who introduced the style at this show. She’s the author of American Country Classics (1990), which pictured peeling white paint, baskets, painted wooden toys and rag dolls. Does the end of the show mean the style has lost its popularity? We’ve noticed that white painted furniture at shows is now slick and glossy and shows no sign of wear. And accessories are much simpler. Has “country” been replaced by “techy”—steel cabinets and metal-topped work tables?
