Haeger Potteries closed May 1, 2016, after 145 years. In recent years, the Illinois pottery company made artware and decorative accessories, but the competition from foreign companies with lower labor costs and increased regulations forced the closing. The company was founded by Daniel Haeger in 1871 and has been run by family members ever since. Martin Stangl, Sascha Brastoff and Royal Hickman were all designers for the company. There will be some sort of sale of the molds and saved historical pieces including the 8-foot-tall vase made for the Chicago World’s Fair. Remember the black panther that was a figurine or a lamp on top of the TV set in the 1950s? It may be the most famous of the Haeger animals.
