Part of Hitler’s coding machine, a Lorenz teleprinter, was sold on eBay in England for $14. It was advertised as a German telegram machine in its case. A museum bought it, borrowed a cipher machine like the one used when encrypting or deciphering messages, and is looking for a final missing part to restore the machine to working order. During the war, an English mathematician broke the code and Hitler’s top secret messages to Nazi high command were no longer secret. Only four of the machines are known to have survived.
