Wallace Nutting was not the only one who sold hand-colored photographs in the early 1900s. Fred Thompson of Portland, Me., sold similar pictures, and once even worked with Nutting. Both liked photos of Colonial interiors and outdoor landscapes. A Thompson picture of five kittens on a shelf, called “Happy Family,” sold at a fall Michael Ivankovich auction in Allentown, Pa., for $3,520. It’s a rare photo similar to a picture of puppies by Nutting.
