The oldest Francis I silverware made by Reed & Barton from 1907 to 1950 has clearly defined details and a dark patina that enhances the pattern’s details. Pieces are backstamped with Reed & Barton’s eagle-R-lion mark, the word “Sterling” and sometimes “Patent Pending” or “Pat. July ’07.” Since 1950, Francis I pieces have a glossy finish, little patina and less-clear details. Pieces are backstamped “Sterling” and “Reed & Barton.” Francis I is still one of the most popular (and expensive) American flatware patterns.
