Fireplaces

Fireplaces, the focal point in a traditional living room, are in style again for new houses. Vintage and antique fireplace mantels are selling at shows, auctions, and shops that sell salvage items from demolished houses. A 1930s fireplace surround with pictorial Rookwood tiles sold for $2,500; an antique fireplace with carved wooden ribbons, swags and a Cupid’s head brought $27,850; and a carved marble mantel with columns from a house by 18th-century architect William Chambers went for $49,300. New surrounds in older styles sell for $200 to $2,000 or more if made to order. Check salvage stores and ask dealers if they know of any mantels. Because of the size, they are often sold close to home.
