As more collectibles and antiques are sold on the Internet, our shopping choices have become international. The Upper Canadian Antique Showcase magazine, published in Ontario, features objects from all over Canada, including English antiques imported in the past—items that are fairly easy to find and popular north of our border. It may surprise American collectors to learn that special pieces of flow blue, historic Staffordshire and even carnival glass rarely seen at a Midwestern show can be found in Canada. Our northern neighbors put much more emphasis on English porcelains and show little interest in American art pottery, but they’re shopping for studio pottery made since the 1960s. Folk art is big, too—but most is Canadian and unlike what we’re used to. Brown wooden furniture seems to still be popular in Canada, while it’s in a downturn here. Dealers who realize the national differences can buy in one country and make a profit selling in the other.
