Q:I have a Lane hope chest that my mother got in 1938. It’s marked inside “Altavista Va.” with serial number 112331 and style number 48388X. Can you tell me when the chest was made?

A:John Lane bought a box plant in Altavista, Va., in 1912. His son, Ed Hudson Lane, soon began making cedar chests in the factory. The business was incorporated as Standard Red Cedar Chest Co. During World War I, the factory was converted to wartime production and made ammunition boxes. In 1922 the name of the company was changed to The Lane Co. The Lane family continued to operate the business until 1986, when Interco took over the company. Lane is now part of Furniture Brands International. The serial number indicates that your chest was made on Nov. 23, 1931. There is a recall on locks on Lane chests made before 1987. The lock on your cedar chest should be replaced because a child could get trapped inside and suffocate. Contact the company via its website, www.LaneFurniture.com, and you will be sent a free replacement lock.

I have a large cedar chest with that written on it and the Lane AltaVista, VA and the image above it.

It’s just solid wood on the outside and cedar inside. I’m not really sure where the serial number is. The only paper I have with it is one about The Destructive Moth. How to protect against moth damage. Just trying to find the price range for it. I honestly had no idea what it even was, just had it sitting in my living room.

I’m looking for information regarding the date of my Lane Cedar Chest stamped Lane, Altavista, Va on the issue lid. The bottom is stamped style number 48I30. It is not stamped with a serial number, just the style number. How can I date the piece? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Have a cedar chest that has a label saying: “The Standard Red Cedar Chest Company, Altavista, VA”, model 402, serial number 2800. It would appear to be a pre WWI item. How much is this thing worth? All I see is several people asking the same question with no reply or answers.

Hello, We have come into possession of a Chest that has a Label saying: “The Standard Red Cedar Chest Company, Altavista, VA” I gather from helpful heading above that is was built before 1922 when the name of the Company was changed to “Lane” and after the business was incorporated as the Standard Red Cedar Chest Co. During World War I. Any idea of the value of this Chest that is very good condition. There are some original instructions that came with the Chest that I could send to anyone interested in the purchase of this now probably 100 year old chest. Thanks, Doug Fox Ellington, CT

Just got my Lane chest & am curious about the age and other things. Any help is appreciated! Style No: 9582-04 Serial No: 2375120 Name on inside of lid is Virginia Maid by Lane.

She needs a little TLC and I have started on that, biggest issue is the base. Is it possible to replace as it is made from particle board? Are there replacement parts available?

    Thank you,

    BevieJune
