Most of us know Zsolnay made iridescent glazed vases in the Art Nouveau style. But a recent exhibition at Bard Graduate Center and a book based on the exhibit, Hungarian Ceramics from Zsolnay Manufactory, 1853-2001 (Yale University Press, New Haven, CT, $54, c2002, 336 pages), show the factory’s diverse production. Art Deco, modern, “Persian,” and Art Nouveau designs are illustrated in the book. There is also a section on architectural tiles. It is a “must” for anyone interested in Hungarian ceramics.
