Q: My mom and dad were given this swan dish as a wedding gift in 1950. I found a similar one in an antiques shop and the shop owner said it was a Duncan & Miller piece, although it wasn’t marked. My parents’ swan is definitely different, more slender, daintier, and also without the maker’s mark. Do any Duncan & Miller pieces have the company stamp or logo?

A: George Duncan started his glass company in 1865. John Miller became a designer for George Duncan & Sons in 1874. The company was known as Duncan & Miller from 1893 until 1955, when the United States Glass Company bought the molds and other assets of Duncan & Miller. The company made several versions of the swan dish. The pattern is Pall Mall or No. 30 and was made in different colors and in several sizes. It was made by Duncan & Miller from 1943 to 1955. The dishes were not always marked. Tiffin, a subsidiary of U.S. Glass, made swan dishes from the Duncan & Miller molds after 1955. Price depends on the size. A 9 by 12 inch green swan with green dish sold for $35 recently.
