Q: I got this figurine from my grandmother. I think it’s a Hedi Schoop harlequin figurine. I thought these were made in California but it’s marked on the back “W1379 Japan.” I’d like to know what it’s worth.

A: Hedi Schoop (1906-1995) was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1933. She started Hedi Schoop Art Creations in North Hollywood, California, in 1940. After the business burnt down in 1958, Schoop sold some of the molds and began designing for other companies. Your figurine is one of a pair of harlequin dancers often credited to Hedi Schoop or to Lefton China, an importing company. Since Schoop marked her figurines with her name or the company name, and made them in the United States, your figurine was probably not made by her. It was made in Japan after 1952 and imported by The Geo. Zoltan Co., which was in business in Chicago from 1941 to 2001. Lefton used foil stickers on some pieces and the stickers often fell off or were removed. Value of your figurine, about $20.
