Q: We acquired a Doulton porcelain beer, wine or whiskey vat marked “Made in England by Doulton & Co. Ltd., Lambeth-London.” We’re not sure what it is. Can you tell us the history and what it’s worth?

A: This a “spirit barrel,” which could have been used for whiskey, wine, or other spirits. Doulton & Co. made earthenware and stoneware at the Lambeth works in London from about 1858 to 1956. The mark gives clues to the age of the barrel. The company name became Doulton & Co. Ltd. when it was incorporated in 1899. The words “Made in England” were used after 1932, so your barrel was made after that year. Value $75.
