Q: Can you tell me anything about this whimsical chair? The only thing we know about it is it was given to my grandmother (1900-1983) by a relative living on Cape Cod. There are no markings on it. It appears to be made of oak. We’ve never seen another one like it.

A: Lots of unusual wooden chairs were made around 1900. Usually they are made of oak and are decorated with carved or pressed figures and designs. They are sometimes called “North Wind” chairs because they often include the head of the North Wind blowing up a storm. This is not a design everyone wants. It could be worth $200 to just the right person.
