Q: I have 12 divided blue and white plates that say “Made in Japan” on the back. Do you have any idea of the value of these plates?
A: Divided plates like yours are called “grill plates” and the pattern of your plate is a famous one called “Blue Willow.” Grill plates were popular from the 1930s to the 1950s. They have divisions that keep meat, veggies, and potatoes separated. Willow pattern dishes, picturing a bridge, willow trees, birds, and a Chinese landscape, were first made in England in the late 1700s. Since then the pattern has been copied by factories in other countries and it is still being made. Blue is the most common color, but the pattern has also been made in other colors. Value of your plates: about $100 for all 12.
I have eight blue willow plates but the design is different than all the other plates I have seen here and on eBay. The same elements are in the pattern but the configuration is different. Still blue and divided but each area has a border around it. They simply say on the back “Rowland and Marcellus” and what appears to be a C or an O. The next line is Made in England. There are also so very faint flowers or snowflakes in different spots on the back. Any clue if theres are more or less valuable than the ones that are so plentiful on the net? Preciate ya.
Hello the plates I have say willow england and the marking is on the side of the plate which would indicate the factory in england the plates were made. These would put the plates in the 1700 era what would the value of five of them be.
Kind Regards,
Susan Caisse
I’ve always heard this style of divided plate called a “chop” plate. Are both terms correct ?
