Q. I like this beautiful antique, but I don’t know what it is. The word “Jewel” is on the neck and a patent date, Jan. 26, 1885 (or ’88), is marked on the bottom. It’s painted with black lacquer and has a sliding awl-like metal part in the center. It measures 9 3/8 inches long by 4 5/8 inches wide. What do you think?
