Pewabic Pottery

Pewabic Pottery

Pewabic Pottery was founded by Mary Chase Perry and Horace Caulkins in 1903 in Detroit, Michigan. The company made many types of art pottery, including pieces with matte green glaze and an iridescent crystalline glaze. Mary married William Stratton in 1918. After she died in 1961, her secretary, Ella Peters, managed the pottery. Ella and her husband, Ira, continued to made pottery with Pewabic glazes in their home studio until 1969. The Pewabic Society, Inc., a non-profit organization, took ownership of the pottery in 1981 and resumed production. Architectural tiles, bowls, vases, lamps, and other pottery items are still being made.
