Studio Potters

The studio pottery movement in England started in the 1920s. Individual potters and designers created pots and figures in new and sometimes eccentric styles. The ideal of a small pottery where pieces are handmade continued through the century. New techniques, unusual glazes, and even the use of materials other than clay were tried. Some designers also worked for the large ceramics companies creating unusual shapes and decorations for vases and dinnerwares.
