A Ty Cobb tobacco tin auctioned for $30,867 in December. The tin, made about 1910, was found behind a hidden door at the back of a closet when a house was remodeled in 2006. The new owner realized the tin’s value when he saw one featured on a TV show. Fewer than a dozen are known to exist, according to Memory Lane Inc., the California auction that sold the tin. The tin shows Ty Cobb with his baseball bat. It was originally sold with a Cobb baseball card—the version with Cobb on the front and an ad for Cobb Tobacco on the back.
