Do not use lemon-scented detergent or dishwasher “soap” when washing any glassware or china with painted decorations, like 1950s cocktail glasses or labeled canister sets. The ingredient that smells like lemons makes the detergent acidic and it eventually fades the decorations, which makes the items worthless to collectors. Hand-washing is better than dishwasher cleaning because of the heat.
