New synthetic fabrics like rayon and polyester will fluoresce under a black light. If they are used to patch an old cotton quilt, the synthetics will show up quickly. So will any new thread used to patch the quilt. If the old quilt was washed in laundry detergents with whiteners, the old fabric may fluoresce under a black light.
