A silver tankard made by Peter Van Dyck in the early 18th century was miscataloged as “English” at a recent Doyle New York auction. But as often happens, several dealers at the sale realized it was a rare early New York tankard. It had been repaired and was estimated at $3,000 to 5,000. But when the bidding stopped, the tankard sold “to the trade” for $46,875. Van Dyck died in 1751 and very few of his silver pieces are known.
