Gouda Gouda

Gouda, Holland, has been a pottery center since the seventeenth century. Two firms, the Zenith pottery, established in the eighteenth century, and the Zuid-Hollandsche pottery made the brightly colored art pottery marked Gouda from 1898 to about 1964. Other factories followed. Many pieces featured Art Nouveau or Art Deco designs. Gouda pieces often had a matte glaze and were mass-produced for the middle-class market. Pattern names in Dutch, listed here, seem strange to English-speaking collectors.
