A copy of the 1940 Batman #1 comic book sold for $576,625 at a Heritage auction in Dallas in August. It had previously sold at a private sale in May 2012 for $850,000 to a man who wound up being charged with embezzling. Some of the comics offered at the auction were sold on behalf of the company the man is accused of embezzling. To make the story even more of a tangle, one of the investigators working on the case was arrested for stealing some of the comics and trying to sell them. But comic collectors and dealers are smart–they realized the rare comics were probably part of the embezzler’s case and contacted Heritage. The auction, in turn, called the authorities.
