$5.7 Million for American Bureau Table

The Catherine Goddard Chippendale block-and-shell-carved mahogany bureau table sold at a Christie’s New York auction for $5,682,500, although the estimate was a low $700,000 to $900,000. The piece, attributed to John Goddard, c.1765, last sold in 2005 for $940,000. The sale price shows that great pieces of American furniture are more valued than ever.

What a beautiful piece! Is a bureau table the same as a batchelor's chest?
Does the top fold back to create a table?
