Dorm-room and rec-room decorating is taking a new spin these days—with something called a “bicycle wheel collage.” The idea, to mount photos and mementos between the spokes of a bike wheel, is on display in decorating magazines, mail-order catalogs and online stores.

Retailers are selling brand new wheels, usually 18 inches in diameter, ready for hanging. Some suggest mounting three wheels to create a wall collage.

It’s more interesting than a corkboard and works well. You can even use a few little plastic clothespins or clips to hang smaller items.

But you don’t have to buy a new wheel. If you have an abandoned bike in your garage, remove a tire, clean it up with soap, water and a rust remover—voila, you have an eye-catching and practical wall-hanging.
