Antique and vintage Christmas collectibles sold at a recent New Jersey auction are featured in a “Kovels on Antiques and Collectibles” December newsletter sale report. See pictures and descriptions of a Belsnickle candy container that sold for $8,260, a Santa store window display ($7,000), and a feather tree ($1,770), as well as other holiday favorites from the sale. Carnival glass earned its name because it was given away as a carnival prize during its later years of production, 1907 to 1925. But carnival glass isn’t given away today. A shimmering aqua opal Holly plate by Fenton sold for a whopping $22,000 at a Missouri carnival glass auction where it wasn’t even the auction’s top seller! See other best-of-the-best pieces from this superb carnival glass collection in Kovels’ December newsletter. A pair of 1940 Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls sold for more than $2,000 at a California auction. Raggedy Ann will be 100 years old next year and Kovels December issue celebrates early with pictures and prices of several Raggedy dolls.
The spare efficiency of Scandinavian furniture appeals to sophisticated buyers, and at two recent auctions – one in upstate New York and another in New Jersey – there were pieces that appealed to cost-conscious buyers as well. Bidders took home a Hans Wegner chair for $1,380 and a Finn Juhl rocker for $813. See more “fifties” pieces by Scandinavian designers in Kovels’ December newsletter. Also see Winchester pieces that are not connected with firearms made since the company’s founding in 1866. A few rarities that sold at a summer auction are pictured with prices.
Terry Kovel shares her favorites in the second part of her report on the Antique Advertising Association of America annual convention in Columbus, Ohio, where she was keynote speaker. The popular illustrated Collector’s Gallery answers readers’ questions about an “autoperipatetikos” or walking doll, a Majestic radio, a Rose Medallion chestnut bowl and a Buck Rogers Atomic Pistol. December’s Dictionary of Marks lists manufacturers of some of the best mechanical tin toys. The Buyer’s Price Guide has current prices of dozens of antiques and collectibles.
