Happy Mother’s Day!

Whether your Mod Mom’s home is a retro time capsule or just sprinkled with some midcentury modern pieces, she’ll appreciate this figurine depicting an Asian mother and child. It was designed in 1958 by Lisa Larson for the Gustavsberg porcelain factory in Sweden. It’s 11 inches high and sold for $472 at a Stephenson’s auction in Pennsylvania. The handmade look and rough surfaces are typical of midcentury Scandinavian design.

Lisa Larson was born in 1931 in the south of Sweden. She studied in Gothenburg at the School of Design and Crafts, then began work at Gustavsberg in 1953. She was known for her humorous figures and animals made of glazed stoneware. She left in 1980 and worked as a freelance designer for a number of Swedish companies. In 1992 Larson and two colleagues started Keramikstudion Gustavsberg, where her popular designs are still being made on a small scale. Now in her 80s, she still works in her own studio. Lisa Larson ceramics are very popular collectibles and prices are going up.
