Novice Needs Help -- Post Redo w/Photo 2 Months ago
Here's the photo that goes with my previous thread entitled "China Cabinet Prospective Purchase - Thoughts?"

Message from previous thread:

I am interested in purchasing an antique china cabinet (photo attached) and welcome your input. The seller thinks it's primarily made of walnut (including burled walnut on the front sides), and dates from around 1930-1950 (though the style appears to be Art Nouveau). It's about 68" high all the way to the top decorative piece, 48" wide (at its widest point), and 14" deep on the top, while 20" deep at the bottom. It's in pretty good condition, other than some blemishes on the bottom right section. The price is $475, which seems reasonable to me, given the beauty and size of the piece. The top part opens with a small key. The original key is missing but the owner has another key that seems to do the trick. The finish, unfortunately, is not the original (need to clarify exactly what was done to it). I don't have much experience buying antique furniture. If you know anything about the piece, have any suggestions as to issues to consider before buying, or have any opinions regarding the price I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Thanks in advance!

Ann

If all the pieces are there ,nothing broken than that is a pretty good price. It's not an antique yet, From your picture it is beautiful especially the glass. I see these older pieces going at auction between $400-500.00 a lot. If you like it and it fit's in your home, GO FOR IT. Consider a new piece made in China today and those prices it's a bargain but see if he will take $400.00 cash & go from there.

Thank you so much for the very helpful information! I really appreciate your prompt response. And, yes, you're right it still is a little young to technically be an antique.

By the way, if you have a moment, I've uploaded a photo (hopefully, it will work) of the bottom right of the piece, which shows blemishes in the stain. The seller thinks they may have been a result of moisture that entered during the restaining process done by the previous owner. Any thoughts re devaluation of the piece or whether you think I could do anything to fix them? The seller tried to "clean them up" with a little Liquid Gold cleaner but it didn't help. So I guess I'm stuck with them.

Thanks again!

Have a nice day!

You could cover the watermark up by staining it a much darker stain.

Hi there. I checked out the piece again. Nothing is missing and no other damage than that mentioned earlier. I took your advice and offered $400 cash and the owner accepted! Thanks again for the advice!

Take care!
