Silver Salts

Before the use of saltshakers became widespread in the 20th century, salt sat on fancy dining tables in either a large dish called a “great salt” near the head of the table or in individual salt dishes like these sterling silver “open salts” that auctioned at Heritage Galleries in Dallas for under $1,000 apiece.
