Sale Reports
Gone With the Wind Lamps
Frankly, my dear, someone cared enough about this Gone With the Wind lamp to bid $880 for it at an Iowa auction. Here we have the story of more lamps.

Then & Now: The Rise of Roseville
Then: In our May 1980 issue we wrote: One of the best investments in collectibles over the past ten years has been Roseville pottery ... Now: An investment in Roseville at the time of our 1980 article would have been a very good thing.

Double-Duty Drop-Leaf Tables
An antique drop-leaf table can be an investment in beauty and convenience. This 18th-century Chippendale figured mahogany table brought $15,600 at a New York auction. We offer more prices and tips on buying.

Quests for Quilts
This colorful appliqué quilt made of 25 floral appliqué blocks with a chintz border sold at a North Carolina auction for $715. See prices of more than a dozen handmade vintage quilts and a quick collector’s guide.

Souvenir Spoons
Old silver souvenir spoons are fun to collect. They can be used for tea or displayed in a rack, and they’re surprisingly affordable. Skinner’s auctioned a large collection in Boston earlier this year.

A Penny Toy Saved
A collector bid fifty-seven thousand eight hundred pennies ($578) for this little toy that originally sold for a single cent. Be a penny-wise buyer and learn about the California auction of nearly 300 penny toys.

Provenance: George Washington
Provenance, the proof of past ownership, can be an important factor in the price of an antique. If a piece belonged to an important historical figure or a celebrity, it is often worth far more than an identical item without a history. So imagine what happened to prices when Christie’s auctioned nearly 20 items that were closely connected to George Washington.

Editorial: Letter to Lee
Spring Cleanup
Dear Lee, Winter is over, flowers are blooming and spring cleaning has begun.

Collector's Gallery
Nantucket Basket
Q. I was given this small, covered Nantucket basket in 1955. The bottom is signed by Jose Formoso Reyes. It is also marked “Made in Nantucket” next to an outline of the island. Could you provide some history on the artist and tell me what the basket is worth?

Schäfer & Vater Flasks
Q. Years ago I bought a box of collectibles at an auction. This matching pair of 6-inch ceramic flasks was in the box. The cap on the pitcher each figure is holding is a cork plug. The painted label on the barrel says “B. Tuchmann Co., The Wet Goods Store, Minneapolis.” The mark on the bottom of each figure has faded, but it appears to include a pointy circle. Can you give me any information?

Mammy Doll & Buggy
Q. I am told this pull toy is at least 150 years old. When you pull the string attached to the front of the buggy, the metal wheels turn and the mammy walks along “pushing” the buggy. The doll is 9 1/2 inches tall and is hinged at the hips so she can walk. What is this toy’s value?

Coffeepot with Hoof Feet
Q. My quadruple-plated coffeepot is marked by Wilcox Silverplate Co., Meriden, Connecticut. How old is it? Can you explain why it has hooves?
