Welcome to Our New Website
( Kovels Komments/News, News, News )

We have been working for the past year to add more information to Kovels.com. Our newly redesigned website has more prices, more news, more advice on buying and selling, more photographs, more information, and more room for your comments and questions. We still provide a list of auction houses and sources for restoring and repairing collectibles--and we have added a calendar of events, a database of silver marks and pottery marks, researched articles, forums, and more. Join our community and see what other collectors are doing. And get expert advice on buying, selling, and caring for your antiques and collectibles.

If you were a free registered user on the old site, you must re-register. You will be asked to create a username and password. Please note that your username will be used differently than it was on the old site. On the new site, you will use your username when you log in, but it will be visible in any forums you join or in any comments you leave. To ensure your privacy, your email address won't be allowed to be your username.

Take a look and tell us about any  features you like as well as any errors or problems we should fix.

We hope you enjoy the revamped site!

Terry and Kim Kovel

Quick Start Guide

1. How to create a new Message (a.k.a. a new thread) on the Forum

1)   First, you need to make sure you have registered with Kovels.com and are logged in. Once you’re logged in, click on the blue “Forums” tab at the top right of the web page.
2)   Now you need to select a forum. Currently, the only forum available is “Kovels Discussion Board,” so click on that.
3)   You will see a green “New Thread” button. Click on this button.
4)   Enter a subject for your post in the white field next to the word “Subject." The subject you choose will become the topic of your post that everyone will see when browsing through the forum.
5)   Now it’s time to write your post. Click anywhere inside the large white field to the right of “Message” and start typing whatever it is you would like to say!
6)   Now that your new post has been created, you can either preview it to see what it will look like, or you can go ahead and submit it to the forum right away. Below the space you wrote your post you’ll find the “Submit” and “Preview” buttons. To publish your post immediately, click on the “Submit” button. To preview it, click the “Preview” button. If you are satisfied with your post after previewing it, select the “Submit” button to publish it.
7)   You’re done!
2. How to Post a Reply to an Existing Thread
There are a few ways to post a reply to an existing thread. The easiest way is to look for the green “Quick Reply” button at the bottom right of every post. Simply click on this button, click inside the white box that pops up, write your message, and select the “Submit” button. That’s it!

If you would like the option of including emoticons, files, pictures, etc., then click on the green “Reply” button at the bottom right of every post (it’s next to the “Quick Reply” button). Select this button and continue as if you were writing a new thread (the only difference between creating a new thread and posting a reply is that you don’t need to change the subject--because the thread already has a subject). See below for more details.

3. How Can I Customize My Posts? Add Emoticons, Use Colored Fonts,       Add Pictures, Files etc…
First, you need to go to the "post a new message" screen. That’s the screen you come to when you create a new thread or reply to existing posts. If you’re confused about this, see How to Create a New Post (a.k.a. a New Thread) On the Forum” or “How to Post a Reply to an Existing Thread.

Changing the Appearance of Text
You can change the size and color of text, make it bold, italicized, or underlined … or even do all of these at the same time, if you like!  Above the large white box that you type the text of your post into you’ll see a row of small, rectangular buttons. The button with “B” on it will allow you to make your text bold, “i” allows you to italicize your text, and “u” underlines your text.  Below the buttons you will see two drop-down menus; these menus allow you to change the color and size of your text.

To use these functions, first type your text into the large white box. Now all you need to do is highlight the text that you would like to manipulate and press one of the buttons described above.

For example, let’s say you want to make some text bold. Type out your text:

Make this bold

Now, highlight the text and press the “B” button. Your text should now look like this:

Make this bold

It’s the exact same process for changing the color, size, underlining, and italicizing. Just highlight your text, and press the desired button.

Adding Emoticons
If you'd like to add an emoticon (a smiley face icon), all you need to do is look for the rows of emoticons to the right of the white box you type your text into and click on the one you want.  That's it!

Adding Pictures
You may want to add pictures to your posts at some point; luckily, it’s not too hard to do! Directly below the rows of emoticons, you’ll see “Select Image file to attach.” To the right of those words will be a small white rectangle and a “Browse” button. Click on the “Browse” button and search through your computer for the image file that you would like to add. Select the image file and you’re all set.

Note: Your image file can have a maximum width X height of  499 X 499 pixels and a maximum file size of 50 KB

Adding Files
Adding files is very similar to adding pictures. Look below the rows of emoticons and you’ll see the sentence “Select file to attach. To the right of those words will be a “Browse” button. Click on the “Browse” button and search through your computer for the file that you would like to add. Select the file and you’re finished.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What Is a “Thread” and What Is a “Topic”?
If you have never used an Internet forum before, you probably aren’t familiar with these terms. Threads and topics are the same thing; they are a collection of posts regarding one subject. There can be an unlimited number of posts in a thread. For example, someone might create a thread called “Favorite Flea Markets.” Any user of the Kovels.com forum would then be able to create a post within that thread or browse through all the posts that other uses have already made.

2. What Do I Do If I See a Post in the Forum that Violates the Forum Guidelines?
For more information on what kinds of posts are acceptable and what kinds are not allowed, please read our Guidelines [link to guidelines]. If you see a post that violates our guidelines, please report it to a moderator immediately. To do this, look at the bottom right of the offensive post. You’ll see “Report to Moderator” written in blue. Click on this. You should now be brought to a message-reporting screen. Fill in the reason for your report, fill in your message, and press the “Submit” button.

3. How Do I Change My Profile Picture (a.k.a. My Avatar)?
Make sure you’re logged into Kovels.com, then select “My Profile.” It’s on the same line as the “Help” link that you selected to get to this guide. This will bring you to a page with three columns. In the column on the far left, you’ll see a blue “My Avatar button. Click on this. Under the section “Submit a new Avatar for Upload” you’ll see a white “Browse” button on the right. Click the “Browse” button and select the picture from your computer that you would like to be your profile picture. Now click the “Upload” button below. After the file loads (which may take a minute or two), you should be all done!

Please note that the maximum upload size is 2048 KB. So if your file does not upload, it’s possible that it’s too big. If that’s the case, you will have to make your picture smaller or choose another picture.

If you would like to use one of our default pictures as your profile picture, click on the “My Avatar” button in your profile, then scroll down until you see the Default Gallery (it has pictures of a soccer ball, a flower, a guitar, etc). Click on the small white circle to the right of your desired picture, then click the “Confirm Choicebutton below the pictures. You have now successfully changed your profile picture.

4. How Do I Change the Information in My Profile?
Select “My Profile.” It’s on the same line as the “Help” link that you selected to get to this guide. You will be able to fill in details regarding your birth date, location etc. After filling in as much information as you like (you don’t need to fill in any of it if you prefer not to), scroll down the page and select the “Submit” button.

5. How Can I Navigate Between Different Sections of the Forum?
If you go to the forum homepage you'll see a list of all the forum sections, Pottery and Porcelain, Glass Jewelry, etc. Click on any of these to visit that section of the forum. If you want to visit a different section of the forum, go back to the forum home page. Do so by pressing the back button on your browser, or look for the "Forum" button and press that.

6. How Do I Quote Another User’s Post in My Post?
Navigate to the post of the user you'd like to quote. Press the orange "quote" button. A new message screen will pop up with the quoted text. Add any extra text that you'd like and then press the "submit" button as usual to post the message.

7. What is the Topic Icon?
When posting a new message to the forum, you may have noticed a row of Topic Icons below the Subject line. If you choose to select a Topic Icon, the icon will be displayed next to your post in the forum.

8. How Do I Send an Email to Another User in the Forum?
First, click on the name of the user you would like to send an email to. You will find the user's name at the top left corner of a post that he or she has made. This will bring you to the user's profile page. Above the user’s picture, you will see a gray “Messages” button. Hold your mouse over “Messages.” A new “Send Email” button should appear below the “Messages” button. Click on the “Send Email” button. You may now fill in the “Subject” field with whatever you would like the subject of your email to be and fill in the “Message” with whatever you would like the main body of your email to be. Press the “Send Email” button below the message field and your email will be sent! Note that the receiver of your email will reply to the email address that you provided to Kovels.com when you registered.

9. What’s the Difference Between Quick Reply and Reply Topic?
The only difference between Quick Reply and Reply is that you do not have the options of adding text, adding images, changing fonts, etc to Quick Reply. But if you just want to type normal text in reply to a previous post, then Quick Reply is a bit faster and will do the trick.

10. How Can I View Only the Most Recent Posts?
Select “Show latest posts.” It’s to the right of your profile picture at the top left of the page. You will be brought to a new screen that shows all of the posts in the last 4 hours. You can also choose to see all of the posts in the last 8 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours, the past week, and since the last visit by pressing the corresponding buttons.

11. How Can I View All of My Posts?
Click on “My Profile,” it’s white and on the same line as the “Help” button you pressed to get to this guide. You’ll now see three columns. On the far left column you’ll find a “My Posts” button. Click on this and you will be able to view all of your posts.

12. What Happens When You “Favorite a Post?
If you find a post that you would like to make sure you can easily find again, you may "favorite" it. At the bottom right of every post on the Kovels.com forum, you’ll notice an orange “Favorite” button. Press this if you would like to "favorite" it. To view your favorites, first click on “My Profile,” a white button on the same line as the “Help” button you pressed to get to this guide. In the left column of your profile page, you will see a blue “My Favorites” button. Press this and you will be able to view all of your favorite posts.

 5. My main concern is that photos are not showing up when I go to print Kovels Komments or the digital newsletter. We’re sorry you’re having difficulty printing photos in Kovels Komments (our ezine) or in Kovels on Antiques and Collectibles, our newsletter. The problem may involve the settings on your email reader. Please check your Options and see if there  are image-blocking options you can change. Also, you may be able to see the pictures if you right-click  on them. You should also follow the Whitelisting Instructions  to be sure nothing is getting blocked by a spam filter.  Another option is to print the issues from the files archived onlineThese files also contain all the photographs.
 6. Will the Marks database continue to be updated? Yes, the Marks database will continue to be updated periodically.
 7.  Where does your information on marks come from? Information in our Marks database comes from Kovels' Dictionary of MarksKovels' New Dictionary of MarksAmerican Silver Marks and other publications.
 8. What should I do if I can’t find my mark in your database? If you can’t find your mark in our database, submit the question to us. We may answer it in Collectors' Concerns or Mystery Marks in Kovels Komments and help you identify your antique. We reserve the right to use any of the marks sent to us and to include them in our database. See disclaimer.
 9. What if the mark on my plate looks very similar to one of the marks in your database, but not exactly the same? Your plate was probably made by the same company. However, unless the mark is identical, you cannot use it to date your antique. Once you have identified a maker, you can sometimes find other sources to help you date your specific mark. Manufacturers that are still in business may even post information about their marks on their own websites.
 10. I live outside of the United States; can I still be Premium or Premium Plus member on Kovels.com? Yes, anyone in the world can be a Premium or Premium Plus member on Kovels.com.

Search

 1. I don’t understand the search box at the top of the page. How do you use it? You can use the search box to search through all of Kovels.com. If you type a search word into the search box at the top of the page and then press the Search button, you will see results from ALL sections of the website.   If you are looking for a specific type of information, you can narrow your search to newsletter articles, the directory, the price guide, the store, or marks. For example, you might be interested in marks; you can use the Advanced Search function to search only marks. To the right of the Search button, click on Advanced Search. Select the white box to the left of Marks. Now when you type something into the Search box and press the Search button, all of the results will be from the Marks section of the site.
 2. How can I make my searches more specific? The more search terms you put into your search, the more specific your results will be. If you’re overwhelmed by the huge number of results that appear when you search, try adding more search terms or more specific search terms. For example, a search for “England plate” will probably return more results than “Warwick plate” and a search for  “19th-century Warwick plate” will be even more specific. But be careful. Your search will only return results that contain the exact words you choose. So it’s possible that there are examples of Warwick plates from the 19th century … but if they don’t contain the words “19th century” in the article, they won’t show up in your search for “19th century Warwick plate”.

Price Guide

 1. Why don’t you include pictures of all the items listed in the price guide? We report on tens of thousands of items every year and post multiple years of our price guides. We gather the information from a variety of sources, and pictures are not always available. Still, the price guides offer hundreds of color photos in a variety of categories. In comparison, websites that are solely dedicated to selling antiques and collectibles MUST post pictures of all the items up for sale--and the prices shown are always asking prices, not the prices for which pieces actually sold. Nearly all of the prices in our guides are actual sale prices (a few are asking prices for pieces that may have sold for more or less than the asking prices).
 2. Why aren’t my antiques listed in your price guides? Why do you list some items some years and not other years? All prices and photographs in our annual price guide are new. Each annual guide is not a compilation of previous editions. All of the antiques and collectibles priced in our annual price guide were sold (or offered) in the American market that year. We report on items sold at auctions, shops, shows, or flea markets--including online shops and auctions. And we read dozens of antiques publications and review hundreds of auction catalogs. Even some categories can be listed one year and not the next. Listings depend on what happens every year--what sells and what doesn’t.
 3.  If a price in the price guide is more than a few years old, is it still relevant to me? Yes. It shows you trends and also provides historical information on prices. That can be helpful in handling some legal situations, such as valuing items in an estate.   Do you have more questions about the Price Guide? Visit our Price Guide help section here.

Store/Payment

 1. I am interested in buying an item listed in the price guide on your website. I’d like to see a picture. Where can I buy the item shown on the website? The Kovels do not sell or buy antiques. They write about antiques in their monthly newsletter (available in print and in digital), in a syndicated newspaper column, and in books. The items listed on the website were sold at auction, shops, shows, or flea markets during the year noted in the listing.
 2.  I just ordered the Kovels.com Premium subscription to your newsletter, "Kovels on Antiques and Collectibles," but I have decided that I prefer a print subscription. Can you switch my Premium subscription to the print subscription? We’re sorry, but we cannot switch your Premium subscription to the print subscription. We can, however, cancel your Premium subscription and place your order for a print subscription. If your Premium subscription payment has been processed, you will be issued a refund, but we cannot apply this refund to the print subscription. Print subscriptions take 4-6 weeks to process, so it will take about a month for you to receive your first issue.
 3. Can I get a hard copy of a download? I didn’t realize that I have to print out my own copy. We’re sorry, but a “download” means you are purchasing a publication to download to your own computer to print or store as you choose. We cannot substitute a hard copy. If you are dissatisfied and would like the printed version, please contact customer service at CustomerService@Kovels.com. But be aware that we do not sell printed versions of some downloads.
 4. I live outside of the United States; can I still be a Premium or Premium Plus member on Kovels.com? Yes, anyone in the world can be a Premium or Premium Plus member on Kovels.com.
 5. Can I sell your books in my store? Can I purchase your books wholesale from you? Yes, you can sell the Kovels’ books in your store. We do not sell our books wholesale, but our publishers do. Please email your interest to PR@Kovels.com to obtain the contact information. We have two publishers, so please make sure you let us know which books you are interested in selling.
 6.  Do you accept electronic payments? No, we do not accept electronic payments at this time. We do accept credit card payments.
 7. Can I pay for the Kovels.com Premium access by check? I don’t want to use my credit card online. Our website is secure for credit card transactions, and our digital access is set up to handle only credit card payments. However, it is possible to pay by check. Send your payment to Kovels, 30799 Pinetree Rd., #305, Cleveland, OH 44124. However, if you pay by check you will not have access to your online subscription until we receive and process your check. That could take a few weeks.

Print Subscription

 1. I received an invoice for a subscription, but I never ordered a subscription. I thought the sample issue was free. The sample issue IS FREE. However, the sample issue request is a subscription offer. If you are not completely satisfied with your sample issue, and if you do not want to continue to receive more issues, you must return the invoice with the word “cancel” written on it. The sample issue is yours to keep. Our policy is to send only what a customer has ordered. And we never send anything unsolicited.
 2. I received an invoice, but I didn’t receive my sample issue. I don’t want to pay for something I haven’t seen yet. What’s going on? Our policy is to send the sample issue first, with the invoice to follow, but occasionally the invoice arrives first. We certainly understand why you are concerned and apologize for the inconvenience. If you decide to continue with the subscription, please send your payment in only after you have had ample time to decide. If you decide that a subscription is not for you, just mark “cancel” on the invoice and return it in the envelope provided. The sample issue is yours to keep, no matter what you decide.
 3.  I sent in my payment recently, but I just received an invoice. Did you get my payment? It can take several weeks for your payment to be fully processed. More than likely, the invoice crossed in the mail with your payment. If you think too much time has passed and there has been an error, contact us at CustomerService@Kovels.com. Please make sure that you provide your full address, including your zip code, with any print subscription inquiry.
 4. Can you tell me my expiration date? Your expiration date is printed on the label of each newsletter you receive in the mail. Any changes to your subscription, including renewals, can take 4-6 weeks to go into effect. Please keep this in mind when checking the expiration date on your label.
 5. Can I submit a change of address? Yes. You can easily make any address change for any of our publications by going to Kovels.com and clicking the  Contact Us"  link on the top of the homepage. Each Kovel publication is listed there, and you can easily select “change of address.” You also can easily change your website registration address by logging in and then clicking the “My Account” tab. For print products, please make sure you give both your full old address and your new address, including zip codes. For digital products, make sure you give your correct email address.  Please indicate if the change of address is for the newsletter, ezine, website registration, or  Directory listing. Remember: Any change to your print subscription takes 4-6 weeks to go into effect.
 6. I live in another country and tried to order the free sample issue subscription online, but I couldn’t. The free sample issue subscription offer is not available outside of the United States. However, we do offer newsletter subscriptions outside of the U.S. You can order online by clicking on the “Store” tab and following the menu from there.  You choose between the print subscription and digital access.
 7. I live at one address for six months of the year and at another address for the other six months. Can I submit dates for you to keep track of my addresses? No. You must submit your change of address each time it changes. Remember to include your “old” address and your “new” address, with zip codes. Each change of address takes 4-6 weeks to go into effect. It is impossible for us to keep track of any subscribers’ winter and summer addresses. It is your responsibility to keep us informed of your address changes.
 8.  I just received a newsletter in the mail. I didn’t order it. What’s going on? If you received a newsletter in the mail, then you or someone you know ordered it. The Kovels do not send the newsletter unsolicited. If you want us to cancel the subscription, please provide your full address and zip code to customer service or return the invoice with “cancel” written on it.
 9. I am a print subscriber and I just tried to access the Premium content of your website. Do I have to purchase something to do this? Yes. Premium membership. At this time the only way to access the premium content of the website is to purchase our premium membership.  It includes digital access to the newsletter, but it also gives you access to our newsletter archives: articles from several years of past issues, including interesting Q & A’s about antiques and collectibles, sale reports, tips, warnings about fakes and reproductions, and pages and pages of prices.  For an additional fee, you also get access to our Marks database.
