Hunzinger Settee

Q: Can you identify the maker of my love seat? The chair was originally owned by a historic Ohio family. The wood is cherry. It's been refinished but it has all of its original fittings.

A: You have a Hunzinger Lollipop love settee. It was made by George Hunzinger (1835-1898) in about 1880. Hunzinger was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States when he was 20 years old. Hunzinger held more than 20 patents for his furniture designs and fittings and designed some of the machinery used to make his furniture. Other manufacturers copied his style. It's possible to determine if a piece was made by Hunzinger because he usually stamped his furniture with his name and patent dates. Look for those marks on your chair. Hunzinger made the same styles in different woods and with different upholstery. He made chairs, rocking chairs, and sofas in his Lollipop line. Value of your settee: about $2,500.

Adorable!

My favorite thing about receiving a Kovels newsletter is learning about new styles and seeing gorgeous items without bringing them into my already cluttered living space. Thanks much.
