Q: I have a miniature perfume bottle shaped like a cicada. It's made of colored glass and has silver details. It's about 2 1/4 inches long and has a small ring on the end of its detachable head. What can you tell me about it?

A: Your cicada perfume bottle was made in 1923 by Lucien Gaillard (1861-1933). Gaillard was a well-known designer of perfume bottles, jewelry, and glass. The bottle held perfume made by Molinard, a company in Grasse, France, founded by Hyacinthe Molinard in 1849. Molinard is still in business, run by members of the family. We have seen this same cicada bottle worn on a chain looped through the ring. Even if the bottle is empty, it makes a great pendant. An identical bottle sold online a couple of years ago for close to $1,000.
