Button collecting has been popular since the nineteenth century. Buttons have been known throughout the centuries, and there are millions of styles. Buttons were first used as ornaments, not fasteners. Gold, silver, or precious stones were used for the best buttons, but most were made of natural materials, like bone or shell, or from inexpensive metals.
