Q: Can you give me the approximate age of my covered bowl? Notes from my family say it's between 108 and 125 years old. Also, can you tell me anything about the manufacturer and value?
A: The mark on your dish was used by an English pottery named Johnson Bros. starting in about 1900. So it's no more than 113 years old. Alfred, Frederick, and Henry Johnson established the pottery in Hanley, England, in 1883. In the beginning, the company made inexpensive white earthenware for domestic use, but within a few years its china was also being exported to the United States and other countries. By the 1960s, about 75 percent of the company's production was made for export. Johnson Bros. became part of the Wedgwood Group in 1968, and production of Johnson Bros. china was moved abroad in 2004. In 2009 Wedgwood became part of WWRD Holdings. Your piece is a covered vegetable dish or casserole that's a useful serving dish. In great shape, it's worth about $75.
