January 2013

Kovels on Antiques and Collectibles Vol. 39 No. 5The January 2013 Kovels on Antiques and Collectibles newsletter is now available in print and online.

A heart-shaped ice cream scoop sold for over $4,000 and was the most expensive scoop in a “Kovels on Antiques and Collectibles” sale report—part of the just-published January 2013 issue. More than 30 antique ice cream scoops, used at soda fountains, drugstores and ice cream shops in the early decades of the 1900s, sold at the fall Iowa auction. Discover some talented 20th-century American studio potters whose works are going up in price. See pictures and prices of pieces by Frans Wildenhain, Henry Varnum Poor, Antonio Prieto and others that sold at a fall auction for $1,000 or less. More than 35 small and colorful ceramic figural banks sold for bargain prices at a Maryland auction. Kovels’ January newsletter pictures many—from a cat to a caboose to a satyr head—along with their selling prices.

Kovels’ January newsletter also reports on a sale of 19th-century decorative mirrors—large, elaborate and made of giltwood—where prices ranged from the low hundreds into the thousands. “Hunting” memorabilia is also featured. See pictures and prices of vintage ads, shell boxes, calendars, postcards, posters and other collectibles related to the sport of hunting. The newsletter went “on the road” to the 19th annual SOFA (Sculpture Object, Functional Art + Design Fair) in Chicago and shares interesting finds. Regular monthly features are here, too—January’s Dictionary of Marks lists 20th-century dollmakers, the popular illustrated Collector’s Gallery has answers to readers’ questions about photo token concession prizes, a set of 1940s German Red Cross dishes and a dog pull toy, and the Buyer’s Price Guide lists current prices of dozens of antiques and collectibles.
