Q: This Aunt Jemima cookie jar was a gift to my sister in the 1930s. It is a glazed grayish-blue. There is no mark on the bottom. It's in perfect condition. Can you tell me anything about it?

A: Your sister's Mammy cookie jar was made by the Mosaic Tile Co. of Zanesville, Ohio. The company was started by Karl Langerbeck and Herman Mueller in 1894. It closed in 1967. The company's principal products were plain and ornamental tiles, but some ashtrays, bookends, and related giftwares were also made. This was the only cookie jar made by Mosaic Tile Co., but it was made with different colored dresses. Yellow is the most common. Most sources say the jar was made in the 1940s, not the '30s. Family stories are sometimes exaggerated or incorrect. But the jar, if in perfect condition, sells for $200 or more.
