June 2012

Hawaiian shirts are back in style for men. Colorful prints with large tropical flowers are favorites. The best collectible shirts were made after World War II when returning servicemen brought them back as souvenirs. They were made of rayon with coconut shell buttons and labels from shops in the South Seas islands. New shirts are made of cotton.

These are back big time!!! I find these at various thrift shops and yard sales
around my area and do very well selling them at both the local Flea Market and
thru a consignment shop! My buyers are both older and college age. I can get up
to $40 a piece for them.

Here in San Diego coastal communities, not only has the Hawaiian shirt never
gone out of stye - it's year-round beach wear for many of the beach locals &
surfers.

I remember my Daddy had one in red and white that he bought while stationed in
Hawaii during WWII. I have seen a picture of him wearing it. He was a Corpsman
with the 4th Marine Division and saw action at Quadalcanal and Iwo Jima. Today
is Flag day and it would have been his 88th birthday! Thanks for the memory!

Sent there as a sailor in 1978 and fell in love with all things Hawaiian. I
scour the thrift stores now here in my military area looking for only those made
in Hawaii. My mom came out to visit and bought my dad a shirt to take home. That
is the only piece of clothing I saved of his after he died over 10 years ago and
it still hangs in my closet. My husband and I have an RV and they are our
camping "uniforms." It's either Hawaiian or tie-dye day. That way we can
keep it young and fun!
