Q: We have a large pitcher, small pitcher, and basin that were made by Wood & Son. We have visited many antique dealers and they have no idea of their value. Nothing can be found online with this pattern. We know that they are very old because they came to the United States from Germany with my great-grandmother. Can you tell me more about them?

A: Your pitchers and basin are part of a Victorian toilet set. Sets could have as few as two pieces (a pitcher or ewer and basin) or as many as nine or more pieces. Larger sets include a soap box, brush tray, chamber pot, hair receiver, pin tray, slop jar, small vase, and other pieces. Your set is English, not German. Wood & Son was founded in Burslem, Staffordshire, England, in 1865. It was one of several potteries operated by members of the Wood family. The company's name was changed to Wood & Sons in about 1907. The company took over several other potteries in the 20th century, becoming one of the largest potteries in Staffordshire. Wood & Sons was operated by members of the Wood family until it ran into financial trouble. It was bought in 1982 and closed in 2005. The printed mark on your pieces was used from 1891 until about 1907. The name of the pattern on your bowl and pitchers is "Duchess." Your three-piece set is worth about $150.
