Q: I inherited a Royal Doulton collector plate that looks rather old. I was wondering if you can help me with any information about the plate. I did notice a gold hand-printed "D3812" on the back along with the Royal Doulton stamp, but I don't know the name of the plate or the value.
A: Your plate is not a "collector plate." Collector plates are limited editions that were popular in the 1980s and '90s. Your plate is a piece of "series ware." It's part of Royal Doulton's "Bluebell Gatherers" series, which was made in both earthenware and bone china from 1914 until 1928. There are 12 different scenes pictured in the series. Your plate pictures a woman bending over to pick flowers, basket in hand. Plates and other pieces, including ashtrays, candlesticks, fruit dishes, and sandwich trays, were included in this series. Value of your plate: about $100.
