February 2012

The addition of February 29 or “Leap Day” every four years helps keep the calendar in line with the seasons. But did you ever receive a leap year greeting?

Leap Year postcard

This postcard from the early 1900s, is worth $5 today. It expresses a whimsical Leap Day tradition that goes back centuries. It’s the day a single woman can tell her wishes—a date, marriage, or just a kiss—to an available man. “Woman’s privilege” is said to have originated in Scotland, as a statute passed by Parliament in the late 1200s. And men were obliged to make some sort of payment—a silk gown, a pair of gloves or a kiss—if they refused.

So, we get an extra day this year. Use it wisely.
