January 2012

The last check President Lincoln wrote, dated April 13, 1865, the day before he was shot, was found in a box of checks that are 150 to 200 years old. They were found in a storeroom at the Huntington Bank in Cleveland in 2010. The signatures on the checks also included Charles Dickens, Thomas Edison, George Washington, and other important politicians, writers, inventors, composers, and businessmen. The checks are now part of a display at a new branch in Brooklyn, Ohio. It will be shown in the next year in bank branches in six states.

Please explain why these checks were not found earlier, It seems strange that
something this important was not discovered before now. Thanks Pat Macaulay

What an amazing find! Were the checks found in an abandoned safety deposit box?
I've heard that Huntington Bank has moved to Public Square but the building at
East Ninth was opened in 1922 as the Union Trust Bank. In 1932, my grandfather
became the liquidator for the Union Trust (& much of the Van Sweringen holdings)
and in 1938 opened the doors to the Union Bank of Commerce. Did you know that
the roof was designed as a dirigible landing. There is a restaurant and waiting
rooms on the top floor of the bank. It never had a landing though the
restaurant was often in operation for many years.
