The Rubik’s Cube was invented in 1974, patented in 1977, and sold in the United States in 1980. There are 43 quintillion wrong answers to the Rubik’s Cube puzzle and one correct one. The game has been a best seller and has inspired tables, clocks, shoes, purses, salt and pepper shakers, key rings, jewelry, art, and more. A 1980 Rubik’s Cube can be found for sale online today for $125. There is a national speed-cubing competition, and in 2011 the world record for a “solve” of the 3x3x3 cube was an amazing 5.66 seconds. There are even creative racers who improve the speed of the cube by sanding or oiling the parts. And of course there are collectors of everything Rubik’s.
