Lalique Hood Ornament Sells for Record Price

December 2011

Five porcelain and glass fox figures were estimated at $100 to $150 at a Nov. 26, 2011, Wiederseim Associates auction in Chester Springs, Pa. A Lalique blogger spotted a rare Lalique Fox hood ornament among the figures and spread the word. The final bid was $204,750, a world record price for a Lalique hood ornament. The Lalique Renard (fox) had belonged to a member of the famous Du Pont family. When Mr. Du Pont died in 2010, a New York auction gallery took the man's most expensive possessions to auction, but left the fox figures behind.

A fox in French is not a "Renaud" but a "Renard".

I read on your blog about the fox mascot hood ornament. I remember when John du
Pont had this made, as another du Pont owned one, and he tried to find an
original and couldn't. He had his lawyer/personal assistant Taras M. Wochok
have the ornament made up as his farm was named Foxcatcher. I am sure that I
can track down the person who made this hood ornament, and I can guarantee you
that it is not lalique.
