Q: My sister came across this pin while sorting through all of her "stuff." It looks like it has Russian words on it. Can you tell us what it is?

A: The words are actually Serbian, not Russian, and indicate it represents "The Order of St. Sava." St. Sava was the first Archbishop of Serbia (1219-1233) and established the first Serbian constitution. The Order of St. Sava was established by King Milan in 1833 to recognize citizens for their work in the arts and sciences. Members of the military were included beginning in 1914. The back of early medals has the monogram of King Milan I beneath a crown. Your medal does not appear to be marked. Several manufacturers made the medals in slightly different versions. There were five degrees or classes in the order, and your pin looks like the 1921-41 design of the first-class medal. Your "pin" doesn't have a sharp point, so perhaps it was meant to be worn across a sash or belt. Hundreds of Russian and Eastern European medals were sold in the United States in the 1970s and '80s. If your pin is solid silver or gold, it could be worth a lot.
