Our thoughts are with the people of Japan. In the wake of the recent disaster, we can reflect on the beauty of Japanese culture and art.
Satsuma is a Japanese pottery that is popular with collectors. It can be recognized by its distinctive creamy beige crackled glaze.
This Satsuma censer (a vase for burning incense) has four panels, picturing drums and chrysanthemums on a gilt brocade background. The metal cap is pierced with blossom. A blue family crest and a red seal are marked on the bottom. The censer sold for $968 at a Clars auction in Oakland, California.
