September 2008

In the 1940s, a new style of jewelry appeared-the work of artists who could "think outside the box" and create unfamiliar forms using silver, semiprecious stones and unusual materials. A few art historians and collectors have been buying this jewelry for the past 20 years, and at last museum exhibits are introducing the jewelry to the general public. Form & Function: American Modernist Jewelry, 1940-1970 by Marbeth Schon (Schiffer, Atglen, PA, 2008, hardcover, 256 pages, $69.99) is a picture-filled history of the artists and their jewelry. It's a catalog for a Fort Wayne, Indiana, museum exhibit and also a true textbook for those who want to learn more about modernist designs.
